SCHEDULED JOPS AND FIXED CDS STUDIES THIS WEEK - ------------------------------------------------- ** NOTE: GIS STUDIES ** GIS rasters can be planned as normal and can be run ANYTIME (NRT is not required). !!! Before selecting a GSET_ID for a GIS study, please change the ZONE_ID field in mk_plan to correspond to the observed target (for example, do not observe active regions with the 'quiet sun' zone_id). **NOTE: ACTIVE REGION NUMBERS ** Due to the fact that the NOAA SEC Active Region Numbers have gone over 10000, planners are requested to enter the active region number in mk_plan with 5 digits, e.g. "10008" instead of "8" or "0008". Because we only allotted 6 characters to this field, it will have to be added as "10008", and not "AR10008". **NOTE: *** Planners are requested to always keep the 5% gap rule *** *** No more than 5 time-tagged studies should be run in a day. *** The time interval between time-tagged studies should be greater *** than 2 hours. **NOTE: *** Each day, after finishing planning activities, planners are *** requested to send a summary of the next day's plans to *** soc@soc.nascom.nasa.gov. This input will be used in the *** daily meeting minutes. *** If at any point there is a major change to the weekly plan as *** outlined in the CDS Planning Note below, please notify the *** changes to the SOCs as well. **NOTE: JOINT OBSERVATIONS WITH TRACE *** Whenever possible, please select active region targets to observe jointly with TRACE. Always use the CAMPAIGN NUMBER 6950 for joint CDS/Trace studies that are not part of any other campaign. *** **NOTE: JOINT OBSERVATIONS WITH HINODE/EIS *** If you know that CDS and Hinode/EIS will be pointing at the same target, but the observation is not part of an official campaign or JOP, then please use CAMPAIGN NUMBER 7200 to highlight the observation. *** ** NOTE: SPACECRAFT ROLL = 180 Degrees ** >From May 29, the spacecraft has a 180 degree roll. Planning tools should be used as normal. ************************** ** All synoptic/engineering studies marked with ** in Sect. 6 should ** be run during this week. STUDY TO RUN: Either VARDYN_A/v1 (duration 7hr 10min), or VARDYN_B/v1 (duration 13hr 5min) for quiet Sun targets. For active region targets use either VARDYN_C/v1 (duration 6hr 34min), or VARDYN_D/v1 (duration 12hr 10min). TARGET: Coordinates to be passed to CDS planner each day by Peter Gomory. DURATION: Between 6 and 13 hours depending on which study is run. START TIME: Run the study directly after SYNOP such that it starts at around 06:40. Usually this means it should be appended to SYNOP. TITLE: JOP 194 - ACTIVITY IN FILAMENTS AND FILAMENT CAVITIES DATES: 8 - 18 AUGUST CONTACT: Terry Kucera (therese.a.kucera@nasa.gov) ACTIVITY: Multiple space and ground based observatories will be used to understand the filament and its environment in three dimensions and over a wide range of temperatures. STUDIES TO RUN: EJECT_V3/v18 (duration: 16min), STRE4W/v111 (duration 1hr 43min). SEQUENCE: The default study to use is EJECT_V3 for both on-disk and off-limb filaments. For off-limb filaments, the mode of operation should be exactly the same as for the CME Onset Watch listed in Sect. 4 (weekend operations), i.e., perform a 4x12 arcmin^2 mosaic at the limb. ** IMPORTANT: when repeating this sequence of 3 rasters, do not use the "Repeat last raster" box, but use the "Repeat plan" box at the right side of mk_plan. ** For on-disk filaments, a mosaic of EJECT_V3 rasters should also be used but it is up to the CDS planner to decide how to arrange the rasters to fully cover the filament. The message about repeating rasters applies here as well. The JOP coordinator may occasionally request that STRE4W/v111 be run instead of EJECT_V3. This longer study should be run in a mosaic with details given by the JOP coordinator. POINTING: Will be given at least one day in advance by the JOP coordinator. DURATION: Should be run as long as possible each day, taking into account other observing priorities. ---------------------------- * 4.1. THE WEEKEND PROGRAMME * ---------------------------- * The weekend programme involves a set of high-priority, long-duration observations which are run over many weeks at weekends. The content of this programme changes periodically. The current items which are run each weekend are given below. A example schedule for them is the following: Saturday: 00:00-07:00 - Synoptic scan (SYNOP_F) 07:00-18:30 - CDS Limb Active Region Studies 18:30-24:00 - Off-Limb Spectral Study (part 1: North) Sunday: 00:00-07:00 - Synoptic scan (SYNOP_F) 07:00-12:30 - Off-Limb Spectral Study (part 2: South) 12:30-24:00 - CME Onset Study Other options include simply running only one of the studies (e.g., CME onset or active region) all weekend, together with SYNOP_F. ** New entry** TITLE: Polar Coronal Hole Tornadoes DATES: TOO CONTACT: Olav Kjeldseth-Moe (olavm@astro.uio.no) Danielle Bewsher (d.bewsher@rl.ac.uk) ACTIVITY: Detect tornadoes at the polar regions STUDY TO BE RUN: O_LOOP6 (Study ID 113, Study Var 6) POINTING: Raster should be pointed at the best polar coronal hole visible. X = 0, and Y = +/- 940 depending on which pole observed. DURATION: Minimum 2 hours, but raster can be repeated to fill available time slot. TITLE: CDS LIMB ACTIVE REGION STUDIES DATES: Regular weekend study WHO: Helen Mason (h.e.mason@damtp.cam.ac.uk) Peter Young (p.r.young@rl.ac.uk) Giulio Del Zanna ACTIVITY: The objective of this study is to detect microflare bursts in the high temperature emission from FeXIX. The aim is to obtain a long time sequence (several hours) of high cadence observations for one slit position (cb_44) in an active region, just above the limb, and to allow the AR to rotate underneath the slit. A context raster should be performed from time to time. STUDIES TO RUN: CB_44/v1 (duration: 30mins); SIG_FT44/v82 (duration: 25mins) SEQUENCE: Begin with a single run of SIG_FT44, followed by 8 repeats of CB_44. These should then be repeated to fill the available time slot, finishing off with a single run of SIG_FT44. POINTING: Slit should be positioned around 20 arcsec above the solar limb for the CB_44 study. The pointing for SIG_FT44 should be 60 arcsec further from the limb than CB_44. DURATION: Sequence should be repeated to fill the available time slot (at least 10 hours). TITLE: CME ONSET WATCH DATES: To be run for 10 hours minimum each weekend. ACTIVITY: To be run in three 4x4 arcmin mosaic forming a 4x12 arcmin field on west or east limb, to monitor limb over a number of hours. See, e.g. run 15379 on Dec 19 1998. Target limb should be above a prominence/filament or active region near the limb. See Dec 19 run for pointing. CONTACT: Richard Harrison - r.harrison@rl.ac.uk. STUDY TO RUN: EJECT_V3 (Study ID 11, Var. 18) - 15m53s cadence per raster, i.e. about 45m cadence per 12x4 image. NOTE: MK_PLAN settings - number of pointings =3, repeat raster = 1, repeat plan = N (where N fills the available time). DURATION: Minimum of 10 hours. TITLE: AR/FLARE DIAGNOSTICS - this study replaces the Explosive Event Monitor when an active region target is available DATES: To be run during weekend programme when target is available. The HIGHEST PRIORITY is to observe the same AR jointly with TRACE. A recommended target is an active small/medium active region. CONTACT: Helen Mason - h.e.mason@damtp.cam.ac.uk Giulio Del Zanna - gdz@mssl.ucl.ac.uk ACTIVITY: to be run when there is a small/medium AR which has shown recent activity or is predicted to be active. If there is a choice or regions choose one which best fits in the 4x4 arcmin field. If possible repeat on the same region as a previous run. Run ARDIAG_2 (ID 11, var 92 - duration 1h 23m), followed by at last 6 repeats of SIG_FT44 (ID 11, var. 82 - duration 25m each) and ARDIAG_2 again. Move as infrequently as possible to follow solar rotation but so that any cumulative rotation offsets are kept below 20 arcsec from the initial ARDIAG_2 run. DURATION: 6-8 HOURS. TITLE: EXPLOSIVE EVENT MONITOR - run only when no active region available for the AR/FLARE DIAGNOSTIC study. DATES: To be run once every weekend for 8 hours minimum. ACTIVITY: Search for velocity events in the coronal regions CONTACT: Helen Mason (h.e.mason@damtp.cam.ac.uk) STUDY TO BE RUN: Run series of EE_SEEK rasters (Study ID 11, Variation 55) for MINIMUM OF 8 HOURS. Point to central meridian, preferably at coronal hole region (if available! - otherwise quiet Sun). DURATION: 8 HOURS MINIMUM. TITLE: CDS OFF-LIMB CORONAL STUDY (N-S) DATES: To be run once every weekend either side of the Sunday SYNOP. ACTIVITY: Off limb spectral monitoring study CONTACT: Andrzej Fludra - a.fludra@rl.ac.uk STUDY TO BE RUN: Run STRE4W (Study ID 11, Var. 111) once at each of the following locations: N. Pole 1 = X=+110, Y=+1040 N. Pole 2 = X=-110, Y=+1040 N. Pole 3 = X=0, Y=+880 S. Pole 1 = X=+110, Y= -1040 S. Pole 2 = X=-110, Y= -1040 S. Pole 3 = X=0, Y= -880 * Since these are on opposite poles, pointing movements could be minimised by running the N and S components either side of other Studies. DURATION: Total duration about 2x 5 hr 6 min. TOTAL 10.2 hours. NOTES TO PLANNER: If the full 5 hours is not available, then the planner can run just the first two rasters (Y=+/-1040). ************************************************************************ ** 5. FLEXIBLE OPERATIONS TO BE RUN THIS WEEK ------------------------------------------------- ** New entry** TITLE: Polar Coronal Hole Tornadoes DATES: TOO CONTACT: Olav Kjeldseth-Moe (olavm@astro.uio.no) Danielle Bewsher (d.bewsher@rl.ac.uk) ACTIVITY: Detect tornadoes at the polar regions STUDY TO BE RUN: O_LOOP6 (Study ID 113, Study Var 6) POINTING: Raster should be pointed at the best polar coronal hole visible. X = 0, and Y = +/- 940 depending on which pole observed. DURATION: Minimum 2 hours, but raster can be repeated to fill available time slot. TITLE: Blinkers on the limb DATES: Can be run anytime ACTIVITY: Observing blinkers at the limb of the Sun CONTACT: Danielle Bewsher (d.bewsher@rl.ac.uk) STUDY TO RUN: BLINK_ST (study variation 19). Point the centre of the raster off limb, with a small part of the disk within the raster. Rasters can be pointed at coronal hole or quiet Sun anywhere at the limb. Do NOT point to an active region at the limb which is likely to flare. DURATION: minimum 3 hours TITLE: Coronal Dimming DATES: Target of opportunity when suitable active region present ACTIVITY: Observing coronal dimming associated with a flare CONTACT: Tim Howard (thoward@mithra.physics.montana.edu) Danielle Bewsher (d.bewsher@rl.ac.uk) STUDY TO RUN: EJECT_V3 (study id 11, var 18) TARGET: Area to the east or west of an active region which is likely to produce flares. Active region and CDS observations must be on the solar disk. DURATION: Minimum of 5 hours NOTES: If active region is large, planners can use 2 EJECT_V3 studies to cover the area to the east or west of the active region. If so, in MK_PLAN use the following settings; number of pointings = 2, repeat raster = 1, repeat plan = N, where N will fill allocated time. TITLE: SOLAR NETWORK VARIABILITY AND DYNAMICS DATE: can be run any time. WHO: Peter Gomory (gomory@ta3.sk) ACTIVITY: Study the variability and dynamics of the quiet Sun solar network. STUDY TO RUN: Either VARDYN_A/v1 (duration 7hr 10min), or VARDYN_B/v1 (duration 13hr 5min) TARGET: either quiet Sun or equatorial coronal hole. Must be close to disk center. DURATION: Either 7hr 10min or 13hr 5min depending on which study is run. TITLE: FULL SPECTRAL CENTRE-TO-LIMB SCAN DATE: Target of opportunity when Sun is quiet CONTACT: Peter Young, p.r.young@rl.ac.uk ACTIVITY: Check centre-to-limb variation in all NIS spectral lines, stepping out from disk centre to either the east or west limb along the solar equator. **Only to be run if the radius to the limb is free from active regions. STUDY TO RUN: NISAT_E/v1, or NISAT_W/v1 POINTING: The pointing is fixed in the study definition. The planner should choose which of the studies is most appropriate - NISAT_E goes from disk centre to the east limb; NISAT_W to the west limb - based on whether there are active regions along the Sun's equator. DURATION: 7hrs 10min TITLE: AR OBSERVATIONS WITH GIS DATES: Target of opportunity WHO: Lucie Green (lmg@mssl.ucl.ac.uk) Giulio Del Zanna (gdz@mssl.ucl.ac.uk) ACTIVITY: GIS short-exposure E-W scan over an active region. The GIS rasters are E-W scans over 180"X4", and are to be preceded and followed by NIS context rasters. To be run on an on-disc or off-limb AR, in a central region that is likely to flare. Chances that the GIS detectors will trip are fairly small, given the short exposures and the continuous repointing. Select an active region also observed by TRACE. STUDIES TO BE RUN: NIS: ARCONT (STUDY 11, Var 105, duration 43m) GIS: EWGSCAN2 (ID 158/ VAR. 2 - 12s exposure - duration 7m GSET_ID=83, active region) repeat with the same pointing 6 times or more. NIS: ARCONT (STUDY 11, Var 105, duration 43m) NOTES FOR THE PLANNER: 1-Take into account the offset in GIS N-S pointing, which varies depending on the roll angle of SOHO. With normal roll angle, actual GIS pointing is approximately 20" northward of chosen pointing. 2-Time-tag the GIS study. 3-Select internal mirror movement when running XCPT TITLE: ACTIVE REGION LOOP OSCILLATIONS DATES: When suitable AR is on the west limb. WHO: E.O'Shea - Armagh Observatory (eos@arm.ac.uk) D. Banerjee - Centre for Plasma Astrophysics, K.U.Leuven (dipu@iiap.res.in) G. Doyle - Armagh Observatory (jgd@arm.ac.uk) ACTIVITY: Search for active region dynamics off-limb. The primary objective of this observing program is to search for high frequency active region oscillations in active regions, loop systems (off-limb). We will observe with Fe XIX 592, Al XI 550(log T=6.2), Si XII 520, MgX 609, Mg X 624, O V 629 with a cadence 45 s in sit and stare (with the pointing positioned between 20-50 arc sec off-limb). We will look at flows within these loops and will try to find a connection with different dynamical events (if any). STUDIES TO BE RUN: GENE/v110 (51m), OS_AR3/v3 (2h 8m) NOTES FOR PLANNER: Active region must be off-limb, and loop structure clearly visible. The studies must be run in the following sequence: GENE, OS_AR3, GENE. The pointings should be identical for both studies. DURATION: 4 hours. If more time is available, then the planner should alternate between OS_AR3 and GENE, finishing with a final GENE. TITLE: QUIESCENT AR LOOP DIAGNOSTICS WITH GIS (Use Campaign #6950 when observing with Trace) DATES: When suitable AR is visible on-disc. WHO: Giulio Del Zanna - gdz@mssl.ucl.ac.uk Helen Mason - h.e.mason@damtp.cam.ac.uk ACTIVITY: GIS short-exposure scan over AR loops. The GIS rasters are E-W scans over 40"X4", and are preceded and followed by NIS context rasters. To be run on an on-disc AR, at the base of quiescent AR loops (as seen e.g. in EIT 171), also observed by TRACE 171. Avoid ARs that are expected to flare. Coordinate observations with Trace whenever possible. However, the CDS study should be run even if Trace cannot join. STUDIES TO BE RUN: NIS: ARCONT (STUDY 11, Var 105, duration 43 m) GIS: GIWEMT5 (Select GSET_ID=76; duration 3.4 h) (note: 76 is an off-limb GSET_ID, but this is OK) NIS: ARCONT (STUDY 11, Var 105, duration 43 m). NOTES FOR THE PLANNER: The westward edge of the GIS raster should be 20" westward of the centre of the base of a loop system. Take into account the offset in GIS N-S pointing, which varies depending on the roll angle of SOHO: 20" should be SUBTRACTED if the roll angle is 0 degrees. 20" should be ADDED if the roll angle is 180 degrees. **SPECIAL NOTE: GIWEMT5 must be time-tagged, and the planner must add a 20 minutes gap at the end of a time-tagged sequence that includes a GIS study in addition to the usual 5%. TITLE: BLINKERS IN CORONAL HOLES DATES: T.O.O. ACTIVITY: Observing blinkers in coronal holes CONTACT: Danielle Bewsher (d.bewsher@rl.ac.uk) STUDY TO RUN: BLINK_ST (studyvar. 19), please use feature tracking using mirror. TARGET: Coronal hole, either at the poles or an equatorial hole. Raster must be (i) completely within coronal hole, try not to overlap into quiet Sun and (ii) competely on disk. DURATION: Minimum 4 hours NOTES TO PLANNER: **each raster should be corrected for solar rotation, and the planner should request the GSFC operators to select the mirror option for pointing in CPT for this study** TITLE: PARTICLE BEAM STUDY. DATES: Once per week. Can be run more often if exceptional target. Consult with Jeff Brosius (ext. 6200) if advice needed. WHO: Jeff Brosius (brosius@comstoc.gsfc.nasa.gov) ACTIVITY: Regular search for evidence of particle beams during flares. STUDY TO BE RUN: Run FLAREDOP (var. 3) on an active region (the one on the disk most likely to flare). For pointing use the sit & stare method, i.e., repeat the last raster N times. It's easy, and ice cream is awarded by Jeff Brosius to planners who acquire usable flare spectra. DURATION: 6 hours one day per week. TITLE: OSLO SUNSPOT CAMPAIGN DATES: T.O.O. - run once a week. WHO: Olav Kjeldseth-Moe and Paal Brekke ACTIVITY: Regular observation of sunspots. If possible, select the same region as observed by Trace. STUDIES TO BE RUN: Use O_SPOT_A (var. 1) series. Place the sunspot at the centre of the raster. Repeat the Study 3-4 times, following the target. NOTE: the Study consists of one large raster followed by three smaller rasters. In Imagetool, the area of the first raster is displayed (4x4). The smaller rasters are 2x2. Thus, it is important to ensure that the sunspot is in the centre of the field. DURATION: Each O_SPOT_A sequence is about 2 hours, i.e. up to 6 hours once per week. TITLE: EUV INTENSITIES IN ACTIVE REGIONS DATES: Run when active regions positioned close to the central meridian. Run at least ONCE a week. WHO: Andrzej Fludra (a.fludra@rl.ac.uk) ACTIVITY: Map of active regions on the disk. Active region of ANY size is suitable (small, medium or large), as long as it is located between X= -400'', x=400''. If possible, select a region that is observed by TRACE. Regions **NOT** likely to flare are preferred (flare during or close to the observing time spoils the result). Make a mosaic of several rasters (as many as necessary to FULLY cover the active region or the active region complex, from 1 to 25 rasters). Use EIT 195 and/or 284 to select pointings. Check on MDI magnetograms that the magnetic field concentrations are also covered by the rasters. Run study GENE (ID 11, var 100). Make sure rasters OVERLAP by at least 20''. Example: see plan on February 14, 2002. Limb ARs are not useful. **NOTE**: to minimise the number of tables created by the CPT, there must be only one entry GENE in mk_plan covering all pointings, i.e., it should not be split into several entries. EXAMPLE: Number of pointings= 6 in mk_plan. DURATION: anything between 1 and 17 hours/day. TITLE: TRANSITION REGION EMISSION IN ACTIVE REGIONS DATES: Run when active regions positioned close to the central meridian. Run at least ONCE a week. NOTE: This study has similar requirements as 'EUV Intensities', except a different study is used and the emphasis is on the magnetic field. If possible, select the same region as observed by TRACE. WHO: Andrzej Fludra (a.fludra@rl.ac.uk) ACTIVITY: Map of active regions on the disk. Active region of ANY size is suitable (small, medium or large), as long as it is located between X= -400'', x=400''. Regions **NOT** likely to flare are preferred (flare during or close to the observing time spoils the result). Make a mosaic of several rasters (as many as necessary to FULLY cover the active region magnetic field, from 1 to 25 rasters). Use full disk MDI to select pointings. Make sure that all the relevant magnetic field areas are covered. Run study NETWORK (ID 10, var 65). Make sure rasters OVERLAP by at least 20''. Limb ARs are not useful. **NOTE**: to minimise the number of tables created by the CPT, there must be only one entry NETWORK in mk_plan covering all pointings, i.e., it should not be split into several entries. EXAMPLE: Number of pointings= 9 in mk_plan For a small active region, the raster can be repeated several times, tracking pointing with the solar rotation. DURATION: anything between 1 and 17 hours/day. TITLE: AR/Flare DIAGNOSTICS DATES: when appropriate, long time sequences are best WHO: Helen Mason - h.e.mason@damtp.cam.ac.uk Giulio Del Zanna - gdz@mssl.ucl.ac.uk ACTIVITY: The HIGHEST PRIORITY is to observe jointly with Trace. A preferred target is a small/medium sized active region which has shown recent activity or is predicted to be active and flare. If there is a choice of regions choose one which best fits in the 4x4 arcmin field. If possible, repeat on same region as it crosses the disk and at the limb a few days later. STUDIES TO RUN: Run ARDIAG_2 (ID 11, var 92 - 1 h 23 m duration) and then SIG_FT44 (ID 11, var 82) series of at least six rasters (25 min each), followed by another ARDIAG_2 at the end. Move as infrequently as possible to follow solar rotation but so that any cumulative rotations offsets are kept below 20 arcsec from the initial ARDIAG_2 run. DURATION: Run over several hours on each occasion (SIG_FT44 at least 6 times, about 3 hours). Must be run a few times per month. TITLE: POLARITY REVERSAL MONITORING PROGRAMME DATES: Once per week WHO: Barbara Bromage (b.j.i.bromage@uclan.ac.uk) ACTIVITY: Observe each polar region about once per week (the N and S runs can be made at totally different times, but could be timed either side of a SYNOP, to minimise pointing). Each run consists of three runs of UCLAN_N4 (Study ID 11, var 65) - the south polar runs would also have two additional runs of UCLAN_N2 (ID 44, var 36). The NORTH polar runs would be: UCLAN_N4, raster 0 at X = -100, Y = 900 UCLAN_N4, raster 1 at X = +100, Y = 900 UCLAN_N4, raster 2 at X = 0.0, Y = 780 The SOUTH polar runs would be: UCLAN_N4, raster 0 at X = -100, Y = -900 UCLAN_N4, raster 1 at X = +100, Y = -900 UCLAN_N4, raster 2 at X = 0.0, Y = -780 UCLAN_N2, raster 0 at X = 0.0, Y = -922 UCLAN_N2, raster 1 at X = 0.0, Y = -845 NOTE: This study does NOT replace the weekend CDS Off-LIMB CORONAL STUDY!! TITLE: SUNSPOT OSCILLATIONS STUDY DATES: at least once a week, when sunspot within +-4 arcminutes from the central meridian. If time allows, can be run on several days on the same sunspot or on different sunspots. WHO: Andrzej Fludra (a.fludra@rl.ac.uk) ACTIVITY: Point to a large or medium-size sunspot. If possible, choose the same region as observed by TRACE. Run TRIM22N (ID 41, var 29) with the same pointing as SAS250N. Then run SAS250N (ID 196, var 5) pointing 6 arcsec to the right of the right-hand side edge of the sunspot's penumbra, repeat raster 5-7 times (5-7 hours, so that whole sunspot crosses the slit). Keep pointing fixed. Then run NET24 (ID 41, var 4) with same pointing as SAS250N. DURATION: 6-9 hours total. TITLE: JOP 136 - DEFAULT RHESSI COLLABORATION (MMOP009) DATES: Can be run any time WHO: Richard Canfield (canfield@physics.montana.edu) (CDS CONTACT: Andrzej Fludra, a.fludra@rl.ac.uk) ACTIVITY: To be run with TRACE/EIT/MDI/RHESSI. Continuous tracking of a flare-producing active region. STUDIES TO BE RUN: Begin with one ARDIAG_2 (ID 11 , var. 98), and follow with many FLARE_AR (Study ID 173, var 9), 3x3 arcmin field. Follow with solar rotation, modifying the pointing once per hour (or when the pointing change is approx. 10 arcsec). Repeat FLARE_AR for several hours. If short of time, run only FLARE_AR. POINTING: Pointing coordinates are sent out each day by the Max Millenium team. The CDS planner receives these e-mails. DURATION: A few hours per day, when run. It may be continued for longer if the flare activity and chances of recording a flare are high. TITLE: JOP 153 - MAJOR FLARE WATCH DATES: Target of opportunity programme - only to be run if called by the RHESSI team. CONTACT: Peter Young (p.r.young@rl.ac.uk) ACTIVITY: When an active region has a high probability of producing a large flare, a Major Flare Watch is likely to be called by the RHESSI team. As much time as possible should be devoted to the flare watch. Please run the shorter SYNOP (SYNOP_G5/v1) to free up time during the day. During the Flare Watch please run NIMCP/v1 every day. STUDIES TO RUN: The sequence is exactly the same as for JOP 136 (see above). TITLE: TEMPERATURE AND DENSITY STRUCTURE OF THE QUIET SOLAR CORONA DATES: T.O.O., run when there are no suitable targets for other studies. WHO: A. Fludra (a.fludra@rl.ac.uk) ACTIVITY: Observe quiet sun/streamer above the limb. Identify a quiet sun area above the limb, ideally close to the equator (Y=0), if possible. Can be at the base of a streamer, East or West limb. Run STRE4W (ID 11, var. 88) with as many pointings as necessary (2-6) to cover the limb (at least 2 rasters along the limb) and the area further out, up to 1.3 solar radii. Include the limb, but most of the raster should be above the limb. Rasters should overlap by at least 20''. DURATION: up to 7-10 hours. ************************************************************************ *** 6. POINTING: a quiet Sun region **TITLE: GIS GSET MONITORING - QUIET SUN, SLIT 2 DATES: To be run once per month CONTACT: Paul Kuin (npmk@mssl.ucl.ac.uk) Peter Young (p.r.young@rl.ac.uk) ACTIVITY: A GSET monitoring programme for the 4"x4" GIS slit. STUDIES TO RUN: GISAT/v2 (Quiet Sun/Zone 4; GSET=82) GISAT/V2 (Quiet Sun/Zone 4; GSET=84) SEQUENCE: The first GISAT should be time-tagged; each GISAT should be run once each. TARGET: A quiet Sun region. **TITLE: GIS GSET MONITORING - ACTIVE REGION, SLIT 2 DATES: To be run once per month CONTACT: Paul Kuin (npmk@mssl.ucl.ac.uk) Peter Young (p.r.young@rl.ac.uk) ACTIVITY: A GSET monitoring programme for the 4"x4" GIS slit. STUDIES TO RUN: GISAT/v2 (Active region/Zone 5; GSET=83) GISAT/V2 (Active region/Zone 5; GSET=85) SEQUENCE: The first GISAT should be time-tagged; each GISAT should be run once each. TARGET: An active region. TITLE: INTERCALIBRATION 1 DATES: To be run once per month CONTACT: Peter Young (p.r.young@rl.ac.uk) EIT planner (eit@grace.nascom.nasa.gov) ACTIVITY: CDS to run this once a month even if no-one else is running with us, i.e. for our own calibration and monitoring work. Usually point to quiet Sun. STUDIES TO RUN: Standard CDS intercal, run ICAL1_G (Study ID 14, Var. 1, GSET_ID=82, quiet region), followed by ICAL1_N (Study ID 13, Var. 20 ***PLEASE MAKE SURE IT IS VARIATION 20! ***), and repeat this sequence at least three times at the same pointing (i.e., keep alternating between GIS and NIS. If running with SUMER, use the following order instead, ICAL1_G (before SUMER starts, to ensure GSETS loaded), then starting with SUMER, ICAL1_N four times, followed by ICAL1_G twice. This is to ensure coincident timing with similar lines. This assumes that the SUMER running order is 584, 629, 629, 624, 770, 770 Angstrom. DURATION: Total duration 2-3 hours. POINTING: The EIT default pointing is (0,0). The CDS planner should send an e-mail to confirm this pointing or change it by the morning (EST) before the ICAL. The e-mail should go to: soc@soc.nascom.nasa.gov, planner@lasco6.nascom.nasa.gov, eit@grace.nascom.nasa.gov. NOTE FOR PLANNER: ** do not select campaign #500 for this study ** **TITLE: EIS AND CDS SPECTRAL ATLAS DATES: to be run once a week (usually at weekend) ACTIVITY: Hinode/EIS runs a synoptic study called SYNOP002 at the weekend which takes a quiet Sun spectral atlas. To enable cross-calibration and enable degradation of the EIS sensitivity to be monitored, it is a *high priority* for CDS to support this 3 hour observation. STUDIES TO BE RUN: GISAT/v2 (GSET_ID=82, quiet Sun), NISAT_S/v2 SEQUENCE: Run GISAT at the EIS pointing, followed by NISAT_S with exactly the same pointing. POINTING: The pointing should be the same as that used by EIS - check the EIS plan summary file. DURATION: 2hr 30min (including table load for GIS) NOTES FOR PLANNER: GISAT must be run first, and *must* be time-tagged. The CDS planner will receive an e-mail each day from the EIS planner which includes the EIS plan summary file as an attachment. The EIS weekend plan (covering Sat 11 UT to Mon 11 UT) will be sent on Friday morning (UT) and will normally include one run of SYNOP002 lasting 3.5 hours. The CDS planner should schedule the CDS studies to run during this period, at the same pointing as EIS. See XSTUDY or previous runs using XCAT for details of any Studies. Please stick to this schedule as much as possible. It is recognised that these Studies cannot be run in exceptional circumstances such as low-rate telemetry weeks. Due to temperature effects, it is preferable, though not essential, for the pointing to be well onto the Sun for at least half an hour prior to the SYNOP runs. ************************************************************************ **** 7. ENGINEERING ACTIVITIES -- ------------------------ None. ************************************************************************ **** ------------------------------------------------------------------------ --- NOTES: *** THESE NOTES ARE UPDATED REGULARLY - PLEASE READ EACH TIME! *** (1) WEB SITES: http://solar.bnsc.rl.ac.uk/ - CDS home page at RAL CDS Request Diary: Quick Links ---> Requests Tips/rules for planners: -->Scientific Ops --> Notes for Planners CDS NEWSLETTER: Front Page --> Newsletter Current solar 'weather': http://sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov/ -->SPACE WEATHER (2) ACTIVE REGIONS & FLARES: CDS is not a flare hunting mission. Flares can cause detector degradation and their observation involves careful operational planning. As with all requests to use CDS, any applications to observe flares will be processed in the normal way, and safeguards introduced as appropriate. An active region may be observed using CDS regardless of the flare probabilities given by NOAA. If the planned Study is with the NIS, the GIS should be at a parked voltage. If a flare is seen, the NIMCP Study (see above) should be run as soon afterwards as is possible, pointed to a quiet sun area. In any case WIDE SLIT (90"x240") STUDIES ON ACTIVE REGIONS ARE NOT PERMITTED!!! When performing flare studies where there is a good potential for seeing a flare, it is best if the rastering is not done over a small area. This is to avoid just sitting on a flare, without moving off it. Probabilities for individual ARs and other activity information are given on the NOAA Web pages linked to the CDS forecast1.html Web page - see item (1) above. If an active region Study is to be run, and it is not aimed at the study of flares, it is best to avoid active regions with very high chances of large (M or X) class flares. (3) CONTACT ADDRESSES FOR OTHER INSTRUMENTS TRACE: t-planner@cherokee.nascom.nasa.gov UVCS: planner@uvcs6.nascom.nasa.gov EIT: eit@grace.nascom.nasa.gov (4) SPECIAL TARGETS: If there is a special opportunity due to the appearance of a particular solar feature which you feel demands a change to the plan, please contact Andrzej or/and Peter. Such opportunities are likely to interfere with the plan below, and thus disrupt other people's requests. Changes of this kind must be discussed first. (5) PLEASE AVOID STUDY TRUNCATIONS! Please insert the Studies into mk_plan carefully. There are uncertainties in durations and time-tagged Studies will truncate on-going Studies. See the 5% Rule item in the Tips for Planners Web site. Don't use a time-tagged Study to abort an on-going Study. (6) STUDY DETAILS: To examine the details of a study, use XSTUDY in idl. (7) WEEKENDS: To ease weekend staffing requirements it is necessary to load a 3-day plan on Fridays. Don't make them too elaborate! Keep weekends basic! That means that pointing for weekend JOPs must be fixed on Friday. If in doubt, speak to Andrzej or Ron. (8) EMERGENCY STUDY: The planning software is set up to append an emergency study which can kick in if the deferred command store runs out of entries - i.e. loss of commanding. See Tips and Rules for Planners Web site for details. (9) POINTING IN IMAGE TOOL: Please verify that the EIT image used for target selection has (0,0) at Sun centre. If the image is offset, use 'fit limb' to correct that.
